Herald Fishing: South Coast fishermen have ‘spring’ in their step

The new season, with warmer temperatures, should see fishing pick up on the whole.

FISHING hasn’t been that good over the past weekend, with the cold front that hit the coast and the huge swells.

With temperatures on the rise and some really hot days recently, this is surely a sign of things to come.

Although locals can often expect a cold snap or two, they’ll be hoping that some signs of summer fish start to appear soon as more and more anglers venture out.

Hibberdene to Margate has also been doing well with reports of many game species coming out on live shad and sardine baits.

Bronze bream have been on the bite, preferred baits have been pink prawn, crayfish and cracker shrimp.

There have been quite a few undersize shad coming out.

There have reports of shoals of bait fish in the deep but nothing close enough to have a real effect on the fishing.

There have, however, been big kingies in the area. Garrick have come out regularly off the deeper water points on live baits.

Many garrick and kob come out on live baits and chokka baits. Mullet and shad have been the live bait of choice for the kob and the garrick.

Big blob baits have also been working very well for the kob in the evenings.

The anglers dropping big baits for sharks and rays have also had their fair share of action with a quite a few big grey sharks coming out on yellowtail baits dropped with a kite as the wind has been too strong to fly a drone.

Fishing will surely start picking up soon enough.

The weather has already started to turn, the sun has started rising slightly earlier and average temperatures have started increasing.

When spring starts most fish will start feeding again and fishing will be back to what it was.
