Sheppie claims Southern KZN golf league trophy
The league came down to the wire once again.
PORT Shepstone Country Club has won the Southern KwaZulu-Natal Handicap Golf League for 2017.
In the end it was extremely close, with Port Shepstone needing some help from their Margate neighbours to see off Selborne Park.
On the final Sunday, Port Shepstone got clobbered by Southbroom at Southbroom.
Fortunately though for Mot Moleele’s merry men, Selborne Park did not have their way at Margate either.
At the end of it all, Sheppie’s early season half against formidable Umdoni Park was the difference.
It was the captain’s second year in charge, and he was determined to bring home the trophy after finishing a disappointing second to Umdoni Park last year.
“When the year started I decided to dedicate myself to trying to bring in a strong squad. I was aware that it was not going to be easy as other clubs have very good players,” he said.
Part of his success was being well prepared.
“I would always research who was in the other teams and their positions. In all the games that we played I would put myself and my partner against the other team’s strongest players,” he said.
“When we played Margate I was up against Sbu Ntozakhe who had featured in a premier league game. Although I never had any hope of winning the game against him I was determined to give him a good fight.”
“When we played Southbroom I again decided to play their best players in the form of Gary Purtell. I don’t think he will ever forget how I won the 10th hole against them with a long birdie putt,” he laughed.

Mot was thrilled for his teammates. He thanked them for their commitment and congratulated them on their good golf.
He also thanked the various sponsors for their contributions.
The squad comprised Mot Moleele, Gerhard Labuschagne, Chris Stewart, Ian Stewart, Gerald Koch, Greg Hornby, Sanjay Singh, Gavin van Wyk, Leon Reeders, Boet Thompson and Ken Morris.
FINAL LOG: Port Shepstone 2,5; Selborne 2; Southbroom 2; Margate 2; Umdoni Park 1,5.
