Joseph du Preez is Riversmead rugby Warriors’ player of the year
The local rugby club wrapped things up for the year last Friday night.
IT’S been an interesting rugby season for the Riversmead South Coast Warriors this year.
They won the 7s tournament early in the year and followed it up by winning the Usher Cup not long after.

Premier league was another story though, and they’ll need more depth and probably conditioning and commitment next year to remain competitive and hopefully eventually topple some of the big clubs.
A number of players were part of the Southern KZN sub-union team that fairly easily won the Ebbo Bastard Sub-Union trophy.
While some can take a break now, the fact that the Warriors have a record number of players in the Wildebesst Platteland squad is a feather in the cap.
Players in the squad are Greg Classen, Jayden Onkers, Jaques Petzer-Moore, Nico Smuts, Juan van den Berg, Damian May, Lourens Stapelberg and Tian Malherbe.
One of the coaches, Jason Hector, addressed the club on the night.
He urged them to look at the bigger picture, with an eye on the Gold Cup, and even winning it one day.
“Leave a legacy, make sure people remember you. Let this be the group that started it,” he said.
At the prize-giving held at Douglas Mitchell Sports Ground last Friday, the following awards were made.
U/20: All round player – Duan Potgieter; most valuable – Luyanda Sithole; player of the year – Sibusiso Mkhize.
Second team: All round player – Nhlanhla Lushaba; most dedicated – Lourens Kruger; player of the year – Lunga Madlala.
First team: Most improved – Bentum van der Westhuizen; most points – Jaques Petzer-Moore; most dedicated – Bentum van der Westhuizen; most promising – Damian May; all round player – Tienie Viljoen; stirrer of year – Dawie Durrheim; best new player – Jayden Onkers; players’ player – Chris Mitchell; player of year – Joseph du Preez; President’s Cup – Pieter Smith.
