Herald Fishing: South Coasters bag giant fish world record
It was a fantastic trip all round.
Three South Coast friends, Noel Allchin, Glynn Williams and Shaun Posthumus, recently set off on an expedition of a different kind – to land a legendary giant blue fin tuna.
Nova Scotia in Canada is known as one of the best spots for big game fishing in the world, so the trio travelled there to spend two weeks battling it out in an attempt to land one of these colossal fish.
Fishing for these species is no mean feat as blue fin tuna fight long and hard to avoid being taken.

What makes this adventure even more exciting is the fact that it is a highly restricted fishery.
Only one tag is issued per commercial boat annually and the South Coasters had to first become registered Canadian commercial fishermen.
They were fortunate to link up with Glynn’s brother, Craig, a former South Coaster now living in Nova Scotia.
He’s married into a ‘commercial fishing family’ and was able to organise the tags to give the three friends this amazing opportunity.
They spent two weeks fishing for these monsters and in this time were able to land a whopping six giant blue fin tuna and also release a fair number in the spirit of conservation.
The sizes of the fish ranged from 500 pounds up to 1000 pounds. Truly remarkable.
However, what the team didn’t know was that they were about to achieve something really special.
On day eight, Glynn hooked and landed a 958 pound tuna on 50-pound stand up.
By doing this, he smashed the world record in this category of fishing.
It was an absolute dream come true and something the men are really proud of.
