Youngsters encouraged to take up bowls

The Bell is doing its utmost to grow the game.

Bowls in South Africa and worldwide is becoming very popular with the youth.

Recently Bowls South Africa held the U15 and U20 national interdistricts in Bloemfontein.

It was hugely successful and most of the country’s 20 districts sent players.

“Unfortunately in our area bowls is considered ‘old man’s marbles’. The Bell Bowling Club is on a mission to change that perception, one child at a time if necessary,” said club vice-president and development officer, Sharolyn Dacey.

“Not every child is capable of playing school sports like rugby, soccer or cricket. Bowls requires no special skill other than the ability to swing your arm. It’s a sport that anyone, including the physically disabled, can mot only play, but excel at,” she said.

So far the club has held two youth development mornings and they have been very well attended.

Brandon Nicholas.

“To make it fun we have not only given basic coaching to the children, but held fun ‘cricket bowls’,” said Sharolyn.

The development mornings, which are free, will be held as often as possible, with the aim of introducing bowls to the younger generation … and not only the children but their parents too.

All are welcome and details are posted on the Bell Bowling Club’s facebook page.
