Cricketer Ashley Lombard shines as Southerns crush Phoenix

The local team has produced some sparkling cricket of late.

Ashley Lombard played a starring all-round role for the Southern KwaZulu-Natal cricket team in its emphatic victory over Phoenix in the 50 Over Challenge league last Sunday.

The match was played at Port Shepstone Country Club and the hosts won the toss and opted to bat first.

Ali Iftikar and Morné Bishop put on an opening stand of 74 before Iftikar fell for 24.

Matt Redinger made a rare duck and Gareth Bishop 35 before Lombard came to the crease at 143 for three.

He hammered a quick 60, aided by Gershion Lawrence who made 31. Morné Bishop had earlier departed for a well-played 74.

Zeyn Moosa and Yakub Ansari made ducks, having a slog at the end.

Preshen Chand (1*) and Ahmed Moola (7*) were the batsmen at the crease when the innings closed on 262 for eight.

In reply, Phoenix could only manage 139 all out in 28.3 overs.

Sahal Mansur, who didn’t bat, was the pick of the bowlers, with three for 18 in seven overs.

Lombard grabbed two for 36 in 8.3 overs.

Other wicket takers were Lawrence (one for 26 in four), Moosa (one for seven in two) and Gareth Bishop (one for 17 in two).

Redinger bowled six overs, conceding 28 runs and failing to take a wicket.

He hasn’t had too many days where he hasn’t made a run or taken a wicket, so expect that to change going forward.
