Nkosingiphile is as strong as a ‘House’
The competition has, literally, grown from strength to strength.
The Genesis Gym Strongman competition has grown from a small, in-house event into one eagerly anticipated by many on the South Coast.
The recent 2017 version, which was more closely aligned to international strongman structures, saw 25 men and eight women take part.

Events included the bench press, farmer’s walk, shoulder press, deadlift and a medley that included flipping a car.
The winner was Nkosingiphile ‘House’ Nyawose. He’s 25 and is the superviser at the Marburg Gym.
He showcased his astonishing brute strength, placing numbers on the leaderboard that were hard to comprehend.
These were: bench press 220kg; farmer’s walk (carrying 280kg) 30 metres in 11.19 seconds; shoulder press (65kg) five reps in 20 seconds; deadlift 300kg.
“I am happy to see all of my hard work paying off and proud to represent my community and family,” he said.
In the women’s section Live It coach, Helen-Jean Stubbs (22) convincingly took the title.
Her final numbers were also impressive: farmer’s walk (carrying 120kg) 30 metres in 6.55 seconds; shoulder press (35kg) four reps in 20 seconds; deadlift 170kg.
For Helen-Jean, the event meant more than just putting staggering numbers on the board.
“I watched as seven other women competed alongside me in a Strongman Competition … blowing the worldly definition of strength and beauty out of the water,” she said.

76 to 90kg: 1 Mondli Cele; 2 Kelvin Yoni; 3 Sam Ndlovu.
75kg and below: 1 Mhlengi Ngoboza; 2 Mhlengi Shozi; 3 Tim Maisala.
Women
1 Helen-Jean Stubbs; 2 Tracey Williams; 3 Anastasha Alberts.
