Cristiano Ronaldo: Football ‘miracle’ that almost never was… here’s why

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi now have five Ballon d'Or awards each.

Love him or hate him, you have to respect the results Cristiano Ronaldo (32) has produced on the football field for Portugaul, Manchester United and now Real Madrid.

His performances are well-known, and last night he won his fifth Ballon d’Or (player of the year), pipping rival Lionel Messi and equalling his record.

What you may not have know is that the Portuguese star’s career was nearly cut short by a health condition when he was a teenager.

At the age of 15 he was diagnosed with a ‘racing heart’.

Fortunately, surgery was possible, quick and successful… and within a few days he was back at training.

For those interested in heart matters, this is how Wikipedia describes the ‘racing heart’:

“Tachycardia, also called tachyarrhythmia, is a heart rate that exceeds the normal resting rate.

In general, a resting heart rate over 100 beats per minute is accepted as tachycardia in adults.

Heart rates above the resting rate may be normal (such as with exercise) or abnormal (such as with electrical problems within the heart).

When the heart beats excessively or rapidly, the heart pumps less efficiently and provides less blood flow to the rest of the body, including the heart itself.

The increased heart rate also leads to increased work and oxygen demand by the heart, which can lead to rate related ischemia.”
