‘Smurf’s up’ for super surfer Fergie

South Coast surfers did well at the championships.

Heather Clark, nicknamed ‘Fergie’, proved her worth once again when she won the Lizzard/Hurricane KwaZulu-Natal Surfing Champions open women’s title at Bronze Beach in Umhlanga last weekend.

She defeated Nicole Pallet (Ethekweni), Olivia Brand (Ethekweni) and Tammy-Lee Smith (iLembe) respectively in very challenging wave conditions to add another winning trophy to her illustrious career as a professional surfer.

What made the achievement all that more special was that one of her young protegés, Mayah Potgieter, nicknamed ‘Smurf’, won the U12 section, beating the country’s top ranked surfer in the U12 age group, Gaby Herbst, in the process. Kira Attfield placed fifth in this event.

The champs were hosted by Wave Wizards Surf Club and sanctioned by the KZN Surfing Association.

The local Ugu Surfriders team placed second in the team’s event.

Jesse Powell was second in the girls U14 section. In the girls U16, Maja Attfield was third and Claire Haskins fifth.

Jordan Boshoff was third in the boys U14 section.

Carl Roux won the Over 45s and Andrew Banks the Over 35s. Justin Maisch was second and Gary van Weirengen third.

In other surfing news, former South Coaster Bruno Hansen, now surfing under the flag of Denmark, won the AS-4 division at the ISA World Adaptive Surfing Champs in La Jolla, California in the US, for the third consecutive year.

Hansen was paralysed from the waist down after a car accident years ago.
