Herald Fishing: Massive tuna landed off Shelly Beach
The two catches have caused major interest.
Some massive – really massive – yellowfin tuna have been landed off Shelly Beach during the past week.
Nicky Momberg, from Standerton, caught a 101.7kg tuna on the boat Nitro last week.

Some fishermen are saying it’s the biggest one caught in the area for a very long time. Maybe ever?
One fisherman, who’s been fishing these parts for decades, reckons it’s the biggest he has heard of.
Previous very big catches have been in the region of 50kg to 55kg, so this has been sensational.
To really get the chatter going, another huge fish came out the next day, this one a 77kg beauty.

It was caught by Riaan Rijsbergen, also off the boat Nitro. Not nearly as big, but still impressive.
“Even seeing it myself I found it hard to believe, quite remarkable, out of this world,” said one angler.
In Cape Town it can be considered normal to catch big ones of around 80kg and sometimes in Richards Bay some biggies can come out.
But for the South Coast this has been mind-blowing and all quite exciting.
Nicky is a regular visitor to the coast, a private fisherman, who just loves to come down here and fish.
In general, fishing over the past week has been up and down for all facets.
The ski-boat fraternity has been enjoying some superb fishing on some days and terrible, fishless days the next.
There have been some very big tuna (as mentioned) and couta coming out all along the coast and anglers boasting about their catches.
The rock and surf has been the same. With the weather unable to make up its mind, it seems the trends will be the same for the next while.
So, make sure to prepare your tackle and make the most of every fishing outing you get to go on.
With the summer season coming to an end it’s time to start scratching in the reefs and on the sandbanks for some edibles.
The stumpnose are feeding very well at the moment in the south so get your hands on some cracker shrimp and pink prawn and head down to the ledges, gullies or nice rolling water sandbanks and target these hard-fighting fish.

Stumpies fight extremely hard and do not do well if you keep them out of the water for long, so if you intend releasing the fish, do so as quickly as possible and make sure to revive the fish before letting it swim off.
There are reports of a lot of stonebream and bronze bream still on the bite.
Anglers targeting crayfish have been catching some decent sizes. There are many with berries so please return them back to the ocean for them to breed.
Tight lines.
