Double win for golfer Lizzie Currie
It's been a pretty good week for the local golfer.
Golfer Lizzie Currie is on roll, winning back-to-back the Sanlam South African Women’s Amateur Matchplay Plate Championships at Umhlali Country Club and then the South Coast Regional Champs held at Southbroom Golf Club.
She has now been selected to represent KwaZulu-Natal in the Inter-provincial 2018 in Stellenbosch held at Devondale Golf Club from October 29 to November 6.
This was announced at the South Regional Champs by Jane Lind, vice president of the KwaZulu-Natal Ladies Golf Association.
The country’s leading top amateurs headed to Umhlali Country Club from July 8 to 11, with Sunday being a 36 holes seeding strokeplay rounds.
Lizzie said she was knocked out of her first round of matchplay and was sent through to play in the plate division.
“My first round of matchplay I was down the entire way and I ended up taking my opponent to the 19th hole and won on the first play off hole. From there on my matches were not easy at all but I never gave up. I never really had great starts to any of my matches and I was down on every match after nine holes expect for one. I kept telling myself that I shouldn’t worry about my start but focus on having a strong finish.”
A favourite quote that keeps Lizzie going is one by Jim George: ‘It’s not how you start that’s important, but how you finish!’
“I really was not expecting to have done as well as I did. I am so happy to have won such a trophy, especially playing in the field of South Africa’s top female golfers.Winning the plate division in the Sanlam SA Amateur Matchplay 2018 is my greatest achieved yet,” she said, smiling.
The following Sunday, Lizzie played 36 holes at the South Coast Regional Champs held at her home club, Southbroom GC.
Liz explained that after her first 18 holes she was three shots behind Kim Strauss of Port Shepstone Country Club.
“Going into my last 18 holes, I knew I had to make something happen because my opponent Kim was not going to make any mistakes as she had played a solid round of golf in the Sanlam SA Amateur Matchplay. With scores of 76 and 73 I won the open and closed in the gold championship division by three shots. All in all I had an absolutely amazing week of golf.”
