Herald Fishing: ‘One of the best fights of my life’
Reports are in of shad being 'frenzied' at Pumula, Umtentweni, The Block in Port Shepstone, Orange Rocks in Uvongo, Uvongo Pier, Ramsgate and Splash Rock in Port Edward.
Bradley Castle from Margate caught a 10,64kg blacktip kingfish off Uvongo pier recently.
His persistence paid off and he described it as one of the best fights he’d had against such a strong fish.

“After 12 months of searching – and killing my arms throwing plugs and poppers (well over 1 000 casts a week) – in the hope of bagging a double digit game fish on light spinning tackle, I eventually got him,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Maistry Annual Rock and Surf’ Fishing Competition will be held on Thursday, August 9.
The competition is being held from Port Shepstone Sandspit (No 4) to Margate Pier. Starting time is 6am, finishing at 2pm and weigh-in will be at Action Sports Bar, Marburg at 2.30pm.

Entrance fee is R50 per person and tickets are available at Luckys Port Shepstone. Registration closes on Wednesday, August 8 at 4pm.
There are great prizes to be won, including R2 200 for the heaviest edible fish, second place R1 000 and third R800.

In general, fishing has been phenomenal on all fronts. The weather has been kind and the sea has obliged, most days.
The sardines are still around and this is by far the best run we have experienced in many years.
Shad are back on the run and anglers have been busy on the rocks.

The offshore anglers have been landing some great fish. There have been very good catches coming from north down to the south coast regions.
Most of the reports that have come in have featured the words: ‘I beat my PB (personal best)’.
Dean Pretorius broke the 240kg mark with an awesome grey shark at Splash Rock in Port Edward. The shark was released safely.
