Barry’s career-best secures Challenge win

Barry van der Veen and Greg Small cleaned up at the Margate Challenge held at Margate Country Club last weekend.
The popular event was sponsored by Halfway Toyota Shelly Beach.

The course recovered well after the dramatic floods last week and played nicely.
Barry and Greg has 93 points over the two days, to win by five from Jaco van der Wal and Johan Neethling.
They had 41 points on Friday and a sensational 52 points the next day, with Barry shooting 74 off his 15 handicap.
“He just couldn’t do anything wrong,” said club captain, Carlos Pereira, who played alongside him.
Barry works for Toyota, and afterwards, club pro Andrew Curlewis suggested to dealer principal Brian Jones that he may need to work longer hours!
In third place were Angus and Una McLachlan on 86 points, counting out Dougie Smittz and Frikkie van Zyl.
Best score on the Friday was produced by John Crewe and Gary Smith, who had 44 points, counting out Len Wilmans and Gary Smith.
In third spot were Michael and Audrey Scabbers on 42 points and they also finished fifth overall.
Best score on Saturday was a sensational 52 points, recorded by the eventual winners.
Overall, the event was well supported with a lot of locals taking part.
