Karate in Croatia for Wian

It was action-packed to say the least, with well over 3 000 athletes from 80 countries taking part.

WIAN de Beer (11) of Ramsgate recently took part in the recent World Karate Federation Youth Training Camp and Karate 1 WKF Youth League in Umag, Croatia.

It was the 12th such event, for karateka in age groups U12 and U21.

It was action-packed to say the least, with well over 3 000 athletes from 80 countries taking part.

Some described it as the ‘battle of the best of the best’ as youth athletes from around the world aspired to be crowned world youth and U21 champion.

The WKF training camp consisted of three days of intense training with current world champions in both kata and kumite disciplines.

The training camp was followed by the youth league U12 and U21 competition.

Wian de Beer (11) of Ramsgate.

Wian, who is a member of the Suid-Natal Karate Academy, took part in the U12 45kg+ kumite division and finished in a respectable seventh place.

Sensei Coenie Vrey said local karateka were very proud of his achievement.

He also wished him all the best for the upcoming Karate South Africa Elite and Open Championships later this month.
