St Michaels Beach was abuzz with jam-packed surfing action for the recent four-day Tidy Towns SA Masters Surfing Championships.
Surfers over the age of 35, from all over the South African coastline representing seven districts, descended on St Mike’s, battling it out in the waves for the various national titles on offer.

Tidy Towns Shelly Beach committee did a fantastic job in turning St Mike’s Beach into a world-class surfing destination, even planting a whopping 15 palm trees (with plans to plant a total of 35) ahead of the big event.
Take a bow, as well, to the Ugu Surfriders organising committee, Surfing South Africa, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, and all the sponsors for making an event of this magnitude possible.

The weather couldn’t seem to make its mind up, providing some miserable days, with wild and heavy conditions and tiresome paddles for the surfers.
However, the final day was simply gorgeous, as surfers scored epic waves, leaving the eager shoreline photographers snapping some super shots of the masters ‘ripping’.

Two Ugu Surfriders – Heather Clark and Gavin Roberts – made the South Coast extremely proud and won the over 35 women’s and men’s division, respectively.

Others who made waves from Ugu Surfriders were Carl Roux (over 50) who scored second place, and Reg Horne (over 60) who came third.
eThekwini Surfriders claimed the team event.
