Juksei players on target

The game was chosen by the South African government as one of the sports to be included in the Indigenous Games Project.

Hibiscus Jukskei Club held its annual tournament at Margate Country Club recently.

Players from the Eastern Cape, Limpopo, Eastern Gauteng, North West and KwaZulu-Natal took part and enjoyed the competition and camaraderie.

Jukskei is a folk sport developed in South Africa over 270 years ago.

The game is believed to be a predecessor to the American game of horseshoes.

The objective of jukskei is to knock down a target peg by throwing a skey at it.

At the tournament, teams were divided into four groups.

Saturday’s winners were Elize Stoop (Kingsley, Northern KZN), Chloe de Villiers (Eastern Gauteng), Albert Stoop (captain – Northern KZN) and Fanie Holtzhausen (Eastern Gauteng).

Winners on Monday was the local ‘Mean Team’, clinching the A section, namely Dries Steyn, Annetjie van der Merwe, Anne Marie Kapp and Colin Kapp.

Annetjie van der Merwe, chairperson of Hibiscus Jukskei Club said everyone had a lot of fun.

The club practises at Margate Country Club on Wednesdays from 08.30. Beginners are welcome, equipment will be provided.
