Spring back into golf
The 50th anniversary edition of the Champion of Champions is at Kloof this weekend.
The August medal competition, proudly sponsored by Halfway Malanda, was well supported with 60 players competing across five divisions and it was wonderful to have 16 ladies in the field, a new record for medal at Umkomaas.
Players experienced four seasons in one day with sun, rain, and the ever-present wind making the game that much more challenging.
Medal winners for August were Bruce Sutcliffe with an exceptional five-better-than-handicap 65 nett and Natalie Singer with 74 nett.

A Division was won on a count-out by new member Loriven Schnuir on 32 points. Bruce Sutcliffe’s brilliant 41 points saw him easily take top spot in the B Division and Raj Rampathy won the C Division on 38 points. The Ladies’ Silver division was won by Natalie Singer on 74 nett and Bridget Lee won the Bronze division, also on 74 nett.
Grateful thanks to Devlyn Fraser and his resolute team for the good work done for spring treatment. After just three days, the course re-opened with a Spring Betterball competition replacing the traditional mid-week IPS.
Top spot was won on 40 points by Barrie Taylor and Wally Kent. Just a shot back, Harold Horsley and Steve Oliver finished second. Third place was decided by a three-way count out on 38 points with Russel and Evija McKelvey taking the prize.
The fourth round of the SCR ladies league took place at Southbroom with Umkomaas playing current league leaders Umdoni.
With the handicaps evenly matched across all three pairs, each of the games was a real test and by all accounts an excellent game characterized by a balance of competitiveness and camaraderie was enjoyed. Our number one pairing lost their match but were buoyed by the other pairs who finished 1-up and 5/3 victors respectively.
We wish our champions playing at the 50th anniversary edition of the Champion of Champions at Kloof this coming weekend all the best. May your drives be long and putts short.
