Juniors descend on San Lameer for SA Kids

San Lameer hosts a successful Junior Africa Challenge

San Lameer Country Club pulled out all the stops, once again, for the hosting of the recent prestigious SA Kids Golf – Junior Africa Challenge Tournament, for the fifth consecutive year.

Keeping an eye on things are (from left) Pierre van Vuuren (San Lameer general manager), Xolani Gambu and Andrew Weir (both SA Kids) and David Younge (GolfRSA).

Players and families enjoyed playing the challenging golf course and the secure holiday environment that San Lameer provides.

The tournament attracted players from Botswana, Canada, UAE, DR Congo, Uganda, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Kenya, India, and South Africa.

This year, 125 children aged six to 18 years old (boys and girls) took part in the three day event, four if you count the practice game.

The tournament ended on August 26 with the Dunbar Cup, their version of the Ryder Cup.

San Lameer residents served as volunteers at no cost and, as in the past, they provided assistance by being starters, organising the driving range, marshalling and providing shuttles between the driving range and the clubhouse.

The opening ceremony was re-instated this year, following the absence due to Covid last year, and during the ceremony Phathawa Secondary School performed for the players and other spectators.

Another highlight was the annual 80m shootout onto the 9th green from the clubhouse balcony.

The Mark McNulty Junior Golf Foundation, headed by Mark McNulty and based at San Lameer, was again involved with Mark offering some words of wisdom to the aspiring young golfers via telecast as he was abroad during the tournament.
