Lifeguards battle it out at Scottburgh beach

The competition was tough, but the participants were tougher.

Some 29 members of the Scottburgh Surf Lifesaving Club competed against each other in the second leg of the Local Savers Winter Challenge.

Besides bragging rights, the Local Choice Pharmacy put up prize money for the competitors who finished in the first three places of each event.

The competition was tough and the spirit of the warriors was high, as the lifeguards competed in the Run Swim Run, Surf Ski and Beach Sprint events. The climax came in the final event, when all competitors were divided into teams for the board relay.

It was good to see the likes of Steven Jones (a master) come through to win the Surf Ski event while at the other end of the scale it was Tyne van Achterbergh and Nathan Jones (both juniors) who showed their speed by being the fastest in the Run Swim Run and Beach Sprints respectively.

Sibonelo Mbutho, Muzi Shinga, Chad Sibisi, Aiden Overbeek and Keith Jones are all smiles.

After 2 legs, it is Otto Ndlovu who is leading the overall points position in the men’s division, while Tyne van Achterbergh (juniors) and Mia Diamond (ladies) are leading their respective sections.

The third and final leg of the series will be held on October 2.
