Junior golfer aces 4th at Umkomaas

There were shouts of joy when they realised what had happened.

The 4th hole at Umkomaas Golf Club gave up its fifth ace in 2022, this time to young member Rory Bernardis.

He was playing with his twin brother Jordan and cousins, and with Mom, Dad and Oupa watching on, so it couldn’t have happened at a better time.

Speaking after the event, Mom Eugenie, said that the boys were so excited when they walked up and realised it had gone in, that she wished she’d had the camera rolling.

The pitch mark.

“They were yelling with joy,” she said.

Rory, a 7-handicapper, hit a sweet nine iron which pitched a metre short and rolled up and in.

It seems that he had his aim dialed in on Saturday as a few holes later Rory made an excellent eagle on the par five 6th hole.

It shows that practice pays off, and these boys certainly do put in the time on the course.

In regular news, Saturday’s betterball competition was contested by 40 players and despite windy conditions, which seem to be the norm these days, the scores were good.

Brian Stephens and Steve Oliver combined to amass 46 points to take top honours, with new members Gill and Rob Symons just two behind on 44 points.

Third place was taken by Barrie and Warren Taylor on 42 points, and Kuben Naidoo and Viv Gouden took the final prize spot with 41 points.

The Umkomaas ladies competed in the Lewis Reynolds Trophy at Southbroom on Sunday.

They finished fifth overall and once again flew the club’s flag high.

Special mention to Evija McKelvey who shot her personal best score of 87, well done.

Looks as if she’s peaking just in time for the Ladies Interclub scheduled to take place in a few weeks at Dundee.
