Selborne Park Golf Club won the Southern KwaZulu-Natal Handicap League with absolutely no room to spare.
In fact, Adrian van Vuuren’s team clinched the trophy by the least margin possible.
They won their first four games by the same score 6,5-5,5.
In the last round, it worked out that their game against Southbroom B was the equivalent of a final, with the only difference being that Selborne only needed to halve to win the league as Southbroom B had lost their opening game to Port Shepstone.
And that’s exactly what they did, in the process collecting a R5000 prize which will go to the club.
It could have gone either way in a tight finish the TV channels broadcasting the Ryder Cup hope things will turn out.
Adrian praised his squad, who pretty much all played a role in producing a ‘clutch’ shot under pressure to earn a vital point at some stage during the season.
One in particular that stands out was Darryl Herman’s up-and-down from the fairway bunker on the 18th at Selborne Park – out of an awful lie against the lip of the bunker – and to hole the putt as well for a 1-up win.
Adrian also made note of the wonderful camaraderie the Selborne players had enjoyed.
He was also encouraged to see the usual veterans still going strong, complemented by a number of youngsters playing in their first season.
During the season Selborne was represented by Adrian van Vuuren, Tim McGregor, Jacques Kruger, Darryl Herman, Wayne Scrooby, Myles Poole, Elson Chibura, Julius Dlamini, Braam Stiglingh, Chris Zietsman, Andrew Sharp and Hartwieg du Rand.
LOG: Selborne Park 9, Southbroom B 7, Port Shepstone 6, Umdoni Park 4, Southbroom A 4, Margate 0.
