Challenge trophy victory for Damien
Umkomaas golfers are making a mark for themselves on the greens.
Damien O’Connell played out his shoes recently in high winds at Royal Durban Golf Club to finish level par and take the Jannie Le Roux Challenge trophy by two shots.
At one point he was four under par, but he managed to steady the ship after a few tough holes to finish strong. We are delighted to see that the hard work and practise he puts in daily is paying off.
Damien is out on the course every day with brother Noah and cousins Rory and Jordan Bernardis under the watchful eye of oupa and coach – Willie O’Connell.
The boys’ dedication to the game is paying dividends with regular wins and good results in the junior tournaments they play in. Twins Rory and Jordan have also qualified for the Kids Golf Champion of Champions tournament, in the U15 division, which takes place in Ireland next July. Well done boys.
Heather Parsonage played very well in wet and windy conditions to finish nett 73, perfectly on target for her handicap. She raised the ladies monthly medal glass while Cathy Kamstra was awarded best nett in the bronze division.
On the men’s side it was William Creaney, playing in the C division, whose five-better-than-par nett 65 that took top honours and the Halfway Malanda Medal Mugg. Divisional winners were Kavesh Seepershad (A division) and Jeremy Boyd (B division).
John Webster and Max van der Heever shared the two-club pot, and Brian Stephen won the jackpot.
The ladies played league against Southbroom at Selborne in the fifth league fixture for 2022, giving many shots across all three pairings.
Despite some ding-dong battles, Umkomaas was only able to win one of the three games, adding 2 points to their league log, where they now sit in joint fourth place, with two games remaining.
