Perfect fluke for Craig Mitchell

In his prime as an athlete, Craig was a very good tennis player. Golf was something he took up reluctantly at first, but more enthusiastically when he noted the importance of the 19th.

Craig Mitchell has made a hole-in-one for the ages, the perfect fluke coming at his favourite course on one of his favourite holes.

Craig’s sweetly struck shot on the 6th hole at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club came during the Riversmead Poultry Farm Golf Day, which he organises.

The 6th is an iconic hole, with the CH Mitchell bridge crossing the Mtamvuna river in the background.

That’s the bridge named after his great-grandfather Charles, and opened by his grandfather Douglas in 1966.

Craig was there that day, about six or seven years old, no doubt causing his father Denis a few anxious moments due to his adventurous nature.

Proof of his remarkable achievement.

Craig is hardly your conventional golfer. For a start, he can barely grip the club – fingers pop out at odd angles thanks to a car accident many years ago from which he had no business surviving.

To top it off, he hits it the wrong way around, claiming “lefties are better, everyone knows that”.

In his prime as an athlete, Craig was a very good tennis player. Golf was something he took up reluctantly at first, but more enthusiastically when he noted the importance of the 19th.

Did he teeth an iron shot which bounced off the cart path, onto the green and into the hole? No, heck no.
“It was a 7-wood and I knew it was good, then in!”

Celebrations could be heard at the clubhouse. Okay, not quite but you get the picture.

“My first one, been hacking around for more than 40 years and never had one. Practice makes perfect, what can I say.”
Overall, it was a great day, with 102 players. The competition was won by James Carlsen and Paul de Lange.
