The silted dam at the 13th has been cleared out at Scottburgh Golf Club, thanks to P&G Construction. The big machine pitched up last Thursday, and started what has become a nightmare to keep clean.

Apart from all the mud, rocks and weeds there were plenty of old balls waiting to be salvaged-if you could find them. It was like looking for the sixpence in the Christmas pudding. Cosmos our general worker found plenty, but there’s still more in the gigantic heap of mud we brought out. Thanks again to Paul and his staff for their help.
On Wednesday it was a betterball Stableford sponsored by the club. The two stalwarts Mick Marriot and Geoff Thommasen came in with 43 points, to win by one from Wayne Simpson and Tony Power who is back after an enforced layoff. Deane Jooste picked up his weekly stipend by digging out the hidden holes but no 2 clubs were recorded. Janet Beckerly who is out from Wales for three months teamed up with son-in-law Mark Falle and together they came Stone Last. No mother-in-law jokes from Mark and they’re still on speaking terms – for now.
Saturday loomed dark and dingy and doubts were cast if we would ever get under way for the borehole restoration day. But we “kept calm and carried on” and drove off at the prescribed time of high noon shotgun start.
We all got in at the same time, some of us a little bedraggled with the occasional shower but nobody pulled out. The Preston family of Gerald and Bevan managed 48 points to win outright. Following with 46 were Eugene Rosseau and Michael More who in turn counted out Myles Poole and Vincent de Beer. Prizes went all the way down to 10th and even Stone Last Conrad Kleinhans and Lekana van Zyl managed to take something home.
A great day’s golf thanks to the two Petes, Gilliver and Morris for organising and who spoke highly of the support of the players and especially the sponsors who once again came to the party.
It’s a Combined Stableford today (Wednesday) followed by an Individual Umthunzi Hotel Day this Saturday (3rd).
Flyer’s footnote: It’s nothing new or original to say that golf is played one stroke at a time – but it takes many years to realise it.
