Simpson claims first place

The first monthly medal of the year is this Saturday.

After the excitement and fun of last week’s birthday bash for Sarah Falle, it was a sad farewell to her dad Dave Bekerly as he headed home back to Wales and work.

He’ll be back soon for Easter and then again in June for the Sardine Run. The family are regular visitors to South Africa, and being based in Scotties is the icing on the cake, always a pleasure to welcome them back.

On Wednesday we had an Individual Stableford with a slightly subdued field as we hosted the Nomads the previous day and, of course, the incessant heat.

It’s vitally important that we cover ourselves with sunblock and take as much refreshments as can fit into a golf bag or buggy when we go out having fun.

Wayne Simpson is on a streak at the moment and again on Wednesday he claimed first place with 38 points. The other Brown, Graham, took second place just one behind on 37. No 2-clubs and the hidden holes are in Antarctica. The Stone has taken a fancy to Mark Falle, or is it the other way round, as he once again dipped into his pocket for some polish.

Halfway Toyota were the Saturday sponsors played as a Combined Stableford. We set off with lots of water and other refreshments in what always promises to be a trying day for friends. Wayne Simpson and Denis Brown like this competition as they again took first place with 68 points.

In second place were Bob ‘Shank You’ Hall and Ian ‘No 7-iron’ Walker with 65 and John Mills and Graham Brown completed the podium with 62 on a count out.

Ian Walker and Clyde Leisegang recorded 2-clubs and ’nuff said about the hidden holes and Alwyn and Byron Stander were the (un)lucky recipients of the Stone.

Whilst we were out a celebration of the life of Margaret Coates was held in the clubhouse. Relatives and friends filled the place to the rafters for this celebration of a most popular lady. Her life story and reminisces about her were plenty and truly remarkable and great spirit was again in the clubhouse just as Margaret would have wanted.

On Wednesday, it’s a betterball Stableford and the first monthly medal of the year will be played on Saturday thanks to Dischem/Local Choice pharmacy.

Flyer’s footnote: The slice, a face saving shot used by golfers desperate to get to the nearest trees or bush.
