Liv’s golf lights up Umkomaas

Umkomaas Golf Club news and results.

Every New Year’s Day, since the 1980s, it’s been tradition for brave members to attempt the longest hole, otherwise known as ‘Cross Country’.
This unique competition sees players tee off on the 8th hole, as this is the furthest from the clubhouse, with the intention of holing out on the 18th green. The route requires players to navigate their way about 2km as the crow flies, uphill and over dale, choosing their route cutting across several fairways, etc.

This year, more than 40 players competed, in both a men’s and women’s division. Scores are impressive, specifically considering that the rainy conditions have left the course very lush, and there was a typical coastal wind adding to the challenge.
Liv Mazzaro, a 16-handicapper, was crowned the 2023 champion on an excellent score of 15. He was followed by three players who shot 17, namely Dom Jarvis, Greg Thiel and Noel Parsonage. The ladies competition was won by Natalie Singer who needed 18 shots to complete the longest hole.

The first BetterBall competition for the year was well supported with 63 players enjoying the course despite the humidity and heat. With the youngsters taking top and third spot, the future of golf is bright.
Matthew Griffiths (15) partnered up with Catherine Schmidt (18) and they amassed 45 points to take first place.

In third place, losing on a count out to more experienced golfers Steve Oliver and Mike Dennison, were Noah Chadwick (14) who played alongside cousin, Damien O’Connell who just the day before celebrated his 18th birthday.
KidzGolfers are wished all the best as they begin their new school year and look forward to seeing them all back on the course on Saturday, February 4 for the new season. KidzGolf is group coaching, run by EGTF qualified golf teacher Devlyn Fraser, supported by experienced golfers. Boys and girls aged 6 to 18 years are welcome to join, accompanied by a parent/guardian, and do not need to have their own clubs as equipment is available for use during lessons.
Why not come down on Saturday (4th) to see what it’s all about, and if you’re keen, you can sign up? If you’re interested, please contact Natalie, via WhatsApp on 084 4505196.
