Kai Hielckert of Southbroom Golf Club has officially joined the Ace Club, enjoying his first hole-in-one which came during a practice game at Prince’s Grant Golf Club on the North Coast last week.
He was there for the KwaZulu-Natal Open Strokeplay championships, which was played from Friday to Sunday.
The shot every golfer hopes to achieve, at least once, happened on the 8th, where Kai used an 8-iron on the 175m hole for the glory shot.
“There was a gentle breeze but I have gained some distance,” he laughed.
The former Izotsha Primary and Kearsney College pupil is on a short break from college golf in the USA.
Kai is based at Iowa Central Community College, where he spent our blistering hot summer making snowmen.
Okay, not quite, but he did have to wait for the ice and snow to disappear before he could out onto the golf course.
“When I first arrived it was minus 20 degrees Celsius. It’s known for the toughest conditions for golf in the US.”
Still, he has enjoyed the new experience, and is looking forward to heading back in August.
“It’s a big farming state, mainly corn. It’s very far north, we even saw the northern lights there one time, I was asleep unfortunately but was still cool.
His tournament at Prince’s Grant started well after the high of the ace, where he scored 73.
Unfortunately, his form off the tee deserted him a bit, with everything going left, and it cost him.
It’s never easy around Prince’s Grant in a strokeplay tournament and he will have learned a little more about his game and what to work on when he returns to Iowa in August.
