Career catch for Nandus
He said he didn't expect it to be a sailfish, but made sure the hook was set... and fight was on.
Nandus Botha (25) from Anerley recently enjoyed one of the highlights of his fishing career, landing a 36kg sailfish in the region near Pumula Beach.
He fought the two metre fish on his kayak for an hour and 45 minutes.
Nandus explained how Carel Coetzee (on holiday) had caught some live bait behind the shark nets at Umzumbe beach.
“He gave me a nice, fat maasbanker and I hooked it up with a bright pink skirt,” he said.
Not 10 minutes later and it took off, just behind the shark nets.
He said he didn’t expect it to be a sailfish, but made sure the hook was set… and fight was on.
The fish didn’t take much line, 40 to 50 metres at most, and took Nandus about 5km into the deep sea, fighting hard.
Within two hours the fight was over and the sailfish was in the hatch.
“I couldn’t seal hatch as the tail was sticking out on my lap.”
From there it was a long paddle back, against the current, back to Stiebel Rocks next to Pumula Beach.
Nandus thanked Carel for the moral support, describing the fight as an awesome experience.
