Case ‘Closed’ for Jason Gilliver

Scottburgh golf club's news and results.

Jason Gilliver of Scottburgh Golf Club won the prestigious KwaZulu-Natal Closed Champs at Selborne Park last weekend.

The talented player finished the three rounds on a score of -4, to win by one from Astin Arthur (Mount Edgecombe CC).

Jason had rounds of 72 and 72 before accelerating to the finish with a Sunday afternoon 68.

“Feels good to get this one,” he said, not being a man for many words in victory.

It was a strong field, with a number of KZN youngsters attending college in the US back in the country on a college break, including Jack Cubitt, who finished tied for tenth on +8.

In regular golf, members got back to something like normal on Saturday after the deluge experienced on Tuesday, where over 150mm flooded the course resulting in Wednesday’s game being cancelled.
Well that’s the first six months of the year gone, where did it go?

It was the Umthunzi hotel and Conference Centre sponsored individual Stableford on Saturday with a host of players itching to become the latest guests at this venue.
The Mahabeer family will probably take over as Doc Heera Mahabeer came in with 38 points followed by son Nivash on 35 with Steven Myburgh third on 34.

Doc hadn’t finished walking back to the table as he was called up again for his two nearest the pin prizes on the 5th and 10 with the 17th going to Deane Jooste.
Again, and predictably, Doc rolled in his two-clubs and Nivash did the same followed by Rascal Freeman.
Clyde Leisegang brought his son-in-law Brett McNealy for a game and he didn’t go away empty handed as he was presented with the Stone, Clyde refusing to pay his fine.

Members said farewell to vice captain Poomba Joubert after the prizegiving as he is off to live in Australia.
Poomba has been instrumental in bringing a host of younger players to the club and is wished well in the future.
The lists are on the board for the matchplay knock-out. Please try and play your games as soon as possible.
Wednesday is an individual Stableford and P&G Construction will be the sponsors for Saturday’s betterball.

Flyer’s footnote: It is a wonderful tribute to the game, and to those who play it, that for some people somewhere there is no such thing as an insurmountable obstacle, an unplayable course or the wrong time of the year.
