Classic time for Clive and Titch

Wonderful weather, great entertainment and some super golf all made for a fantastic tournament.

The 33rd annual Southbroom Men’s Amateur Classic has come and gone. Flash floods and an icy snap the week before and after didn’t stop the tournament from having wonderful weather.

“I only had one job, and that was to arrange the weather,” joked Derek James, the pro at Southbroom Golf Club.
Some 164 golfers (82 teams) arrived from all, with some flying in from Mauritius, Australia and Zambia.

Monday set the tone of what was going to be a competitive tournament.
Five teams shared the lead after Day 1, all scoring 44 points, with another six teams a point or two behind.

Tuesday came around and, with a slight south-westerly blowing.
Nobody could match Fancourt locals Clive Miller and Titch Moore, who, after a decent opening score of 39 points, soared up the leaderboard with 45 points.

Clive has been a member at Southbroom and still visits regularly. Titch was a top amateur, then professional, before a woodwork injury to his finger. He’s back playing mid-amateur golf now.
Titch really set the course alight, with back-to-back eagles on the par four 5th and par five 6th hole on his way to a sublime 29 on the front nine for an eventual 64.

Wednesday was a rest day although some headed to the Wild Coast for a game.
On Thursday, golfers were treated to another peach of a winter’s day.
With 13 teams within four points at the top, moving day promised to be a big one.
Clive and Titch consolidated their lead with 43 points, while others took their opportunity to move into contention.

Former winners, Greg and Andrew Fox, fired their way to within two points of the lead, with a score of the week of 47 points.

On the final day the two leading teams played together. Both finished their first nine with 19 points.
After four days of golf it had come down to the final nine holes, with Clive and Titch defending a two shot lead over Greg and Andrew.

The Foxes couldn’t quite maintain their form, while Clive and Titch closed out with 21 points and a comfortable win in the end on 167 points.
Roger Lawrence and Alex Paulsen clinched second place on 163, counting out the Foxes.
Tony Perkins and Karl Marneweck were fourth on 162, counting out Malcolm Greenland and Bob Carmichael.
