Warm weather favours Eagles

The Umkomaas Golf Club boasts that it is 'the friendliest club' and once again that claim could not be denied.

It was a cool and cloudy morning when the Village Eagles flew into Umkomaas Golf Club, all 56 of them. Rain looked like it may spoil the flock’s fun but the warmth of the friendship between the members of the Village Eagles soon had the clouds moving off to some other venue. In fact if a golfer had to order weather for a good round of golf then the Eagles had it at Umkomaas last Tuesday.

The Umkomaas Golf Club boasts that it is ‘the friendliest club’ and once again that claim could not be denied. Thanks go to the management and staff of Umkomaas for their help in making the golf day a success.

For golfers that read this report they will be surprised at the scores, so let me give our excuse. With Umkomaas being re-rated, it was decided by the Eagles committee to play the course off the forward tees and use the stroke rating for those tees. This resulted in higher scores than normal so while some golfers are going to be dealt with by the handicapper the high scores are justifiable.

Best man and lady Carl Mau and Terry Bachus.

Winners on the day were Fred van Prooijen, Billy Smith, Carl Mau and Athol Lawrence with 101 points. Not surprisingly the best male player was Carl Mau on 48 points and the best lady was Terry Bachus on 43 points. Even the score of 89 points that captured the coveted Stone Last Trophy was more than an acceptable score. The neat condition of the Umkomaas golf course meant that only 30 balls were lost and Jeremy Boyd showed how well he knows the course by forecasting the exact amount.

See you all at Scottburgh on the first Tuesday of October.
