League tees off this Sunday

The opening round of the Southern KZN Handicap Golf League is set to tee off at Port Shepstone CC this Sunday.

Two-time defending champions Selborne Park, captained by Adrian van Vuuren, won’t be playing, however, as they drew the first bye.

Last year Umdoni and Southbroom both fielded two teams, but it did not seem to help their chances of actually winning the league.

There’s a slight chance Southbroom may ask to enter a second side, but it’s slim.
Runners-up last year were Southbroom, followed by Port Shepstone, then Southbroom B, Umdoni A, and Umdoni B, with Margate picking up the wooden spoon.

Hosts Sheppie will take on Umdoni, while Margate will play Southbroom.
The five clubs involved are Selborne, Umdoni Park, Port Shepstone, Margate and Southbroom.

The format is greensomes matchplay in the morning, followed by afternoon singles.
In greensomes, all four players drive on each tee.

Each pair then decides which of their drives they will use, and the other ball is picked up.
Whichever player’s drive is chosen, their partner must take the next shot. Thereafter, they play an alternate shot until the ball is holed, or the hole conceded.

Captains are asked to rank teams lower to higher handicaps (from one to eight) so players/pairs are as evenly matched as possible.

Wet weather saw a number of the fixtures last year postponed, but eventually, it was completed.
So, hopefully, the weather will be kinder to the golfers this year.

The secret to Selborne’s success in 2023 was possibly due to their depth, with 13 players being able to produce solid golf when called on during the season.

The following represented Selborne Park in 2023: Myles Poole, Darryl Herman, Adrian van Vuuren, Hartwieg du Randt, Elson Chikaburra, Julius Dlamini, Tony Outram, Brendan Delacy, Wayne Scrooby, Andrew Sharp, Norman Phillips, Chris Zietsman and Braam Stiglingh.
