Classic win for new Southbroom members

There was a wonderful atmosphere for the tournament.

The 11th Southbroom Mixed Classic has come and gone, leaving many happy memories. Happiest among the golfers were winners Marcel Janse van Rensburg and Venessa Thwaites.

When players woke up on Saturday morning, they were mightily relieved to see that Friday’s gale had just about blown itself out and conditions were superb. After a hearty breakfast on the patio, many gathered to watch pro Derek James put on a clinic.

On day one, a number of teams shot in the 40s, but three teams stood out. Norman and Shirley Jeffery (44) and Don Osbourn and Michelle van der Hoek (45) played tremendous golf but could not match new Southbroom members Marcel and Venessa, who set the pace with a blistering 47 points.

Third place went to Vash and Des Pillay.

There was fun on the course and off. The theme for the weekend was ‘Music through the Ages’, and many celebrity lookalikes were seen on the dance floor.

Conditions on Sunday were as good as Saturday. Scoring was again competitive, with three returning the highest score of the day, 42 points. One of these teams was Des and Vash Pillay, who added to their first round of 40 points and overall third place.

Don and Michelle couldn’t replicate their Saturday but managed a respectable 38 points to secure second place. Overnight leaders Marcel and Vanessa followed their brilliant Saturday performance with a solid 41 points, more than enough to claim Mixed Classic on their first attempt.
