Southbroom secures second at Netpoints tourney
The South Coast club almost came away with the spoils.
Southbroom Tennis Club had five teams of four players each competing in the Netpoints Club Doubles Tournament at Westridge Stadium last Saturday.
And they almost came away with first place, instead having to settle for second, which was no mean feat in itself.
The unique Netpoints system follows a timed format where what is essentially an extended tiebreak is played until the clock runs out. The team that is ahead is the winner.
On the day, teams competed in sections according to strength to take home the grand prize of R5 000 for their club.
The main prize could be won by any team of four, no matter the overall strength.
Seven clubs entered, some with multiple teams. The overall winner was determined by the number of matches won by both pairs within a team of four.
Durban North Tennis Club came away with the main prize, scoring 11 wins.
Overall, 140 matches were played by the 40 pairs in the five divisions. There were only two unbeaten pairs. The winning teams came from Division 2 and 4. In Division 3, 40% of the matches had a winning margin of one point.
Two Southbroom teams scored 10 wins out of the 14 matches played, namely Team 1 (Daniel Francesconi, Stef Francesconi, Richard Short and Brendan Els) and Team 3 (Mike Volck, Raefe Dyer, André Attfield and Prev Moodley), securing a R2000 voucher for the club.
The players enjoyed a great day on and off court, competing against some of Durban’s finest players.
Matching shirts ensured they walked away with best dressed, too.
Others who played, according to their teams, were:
Team 2 – Bjorn Wikstrom and Gaspard Pasquier; Johan van Niekerk and Frank Hall.
Team 4: Zelda Smook and Sharon van der Schyff; Cheryse Wikstrom and Maxine Mackay-Coghill.
Team 5: Giorgia Murray and Summer Dyer; Cornelia Steenkamp and Jenny Senneck.
