From devastation to resurrection – the seemingly impossible made possible

The committee can happily report that this year's tournament was a resounding success.

Margate Bowling Club’s three greens were totally destroyed during the April floods. The club president, Yvonne Baausek, and the committee had to make the decision as to whether the club should cut its losses and close or whether or not it was possible to save what was left to be saved and resurrect the club. With the blessing of the members, the latter decision was made.

The restoration work that has been done by so many volunteers from the club, as well as monetary donations and grass plugs from various clubs along the South Coast, and the determination of the club president to persist with insurance claims, have been overwhelming, to say the least.

Other clubs in the area allowed Margate members to play at their clubs without charging visitors fees. The spirit of camaraderie, which this disaster unwittingly created among bowlers, is something the Margate members will treasure for many years to come. What many thought would be impossible has now finally come to fruition. Fittingly, the club hosted the 21st annual Doug Watson Memorial Tournament on two restored greens recently.

The tournament was again sponsored by former Proteas cricketer Pat Symcox from Re/Max Coast and Country. Pat’s presence at the tournament was deeply appreciated. His team did a magnificent job in ensuring that the atmosphere remained festive and enjoyable for the 112 players who took part, many coming from all over the country, as well as the many visitors who came to support the players.

Floods in April this year devastated the greens at Margate Bowling Club.

Winners were Ian Eslick, Manette Eslick, Hennie Heyns and Erika Heyns. Runners-up were Helen Proctor, Rhett Butler, Eileen Burt and Glenn Hatfield. In third place were Brad Cox, Cathy Cox, Colin de Jager and Rene de Jager.

Thanks were extended to them and to the many folks from the club who worked so hard supplying sustenance and ensuring that the facilities were up to standard. The committee can happily report that this year’s tournament was a resounding success.
