Plentiful haul for kayak fishermen
Beyond the thrill of catching fish, kayak fishing offers an opportunity to enhance your fitness and health.
In recent years, kayak fishing has surged in popularity as more people seek sustainable and motor-free alternatives to pursue the recreational activity.
Here on the South Coast, there is a small but growing kayaking community. Kayak fishing means that it’s just you on the ocean; all you need is patience for your prized catch.

Beyond the thrill of catching fish, kayaking offers an opportunity to enhance your fitness and health.
Kayak fisherman Brendon Schutte said he loves fishing and enjoyed going out on boats when he was younger.
“Kayaking now enables me to venture out and enjoy my sport. It’s exciting and a great thrill. It’s a new challenge and an adrenaline rush, especially when you’re fighting a strong fish. He added that the South Coast has a small kayaking community, and they have started a group to help each other grow and develop the sport.”
Jason Vorster, an avid fisherman and kayaker, caught a black sailfish off his kayak recently.

He caught his prize fish on a 13kg line fluorocarbon trace with a number 3 treble hook using a dead mackerel for bait. The sailfish weighed in at 39kg, and two of his friends assisted him from their kayaks.
He added that it was a bit tricky, with all the weight in his ski, but he hit the beach without having to swim. Jason also gives kayak fishing lessons for those who would like to pursue the sport. If interested, contact him on 074 9789637.
On the rock and surf side, a few shad were caught, but overall, it was a relatively quiet weekend.
