Juniors bring joy at Margate Cup

The youngsters can be proud of their efforts.

The Margate Junior Cup wrapped up in style at Margate Country Club last Sunday, with 18 young golfers battling it out for top honours.

It was the final round of four for the competition, with games held on the third Sunday of the month, played as individual Stableford, with the best three of four scores counting.

Ari Maharaj has displayed some promising golf.

Jared Botha won the boys’ 13+ age group on 107 points, with Matthew Evans runner-up on 96 points.

Alexander Rousseau was third on 95 points.

It was the biggest division and played over 18 holes, unlike the other divisions which were played over nine holes.

Abigail Kreuiter is proving to be an inspirational golfer.

“They played with so much passion, grit and perseverance. They never gave up, and competed in as many competitions as possible,” said convener Carla Potgieter.

In the junior girls, overall winner was Abigail Kreuiter on 48 points. She played in every competition and was the only girl who pitched up come rain or shine.

Jared Botha, winner of the coveted Capital Legacy Cup.

“She is an absolute gem. Her passion for golf has inspired so many of our members and juniors to practice and play more. She has become well known at our club because of the way she carries herself, treats others with respect and her shy smile. She truly has a bright future ahead of her,” said Carla.

The boys’ 10 to 12 years division was won by Reuben du Plessis on 41 points, with JJ Rousseau second on 33 points.

In the boys’ 8 to 10 years division, the winner was Ari Maharaj on 26 points.

“Ari played his first golf game on an actual golf course on our course. This young man is phenomenal and has grown so much in his golf skills and as a person,” said Carla.

The boys’ 6 to 8 years old division was played over six holes, and won by Michael Evans on 44 points. Runner-up was Ryan Botha on 39 points.

“These two took the game super seriously and tried hard to do their best. It was astounding to see how much they grew, learned and kept each other accountable.”
