Smash Masters take 190s title in final round at Umtentweni Tennis Club

The tournament was played at various clubs over the four rounds.

Windy weather tested the players in the finals of the Ugu Tennis Association 190s tournament.

But in the end, after some exciting and interesting tennis, the cream rose to the top.

The tournament was held over the past few months, with the 190 meaning team age combined could not be less than that.

Martyn Nagtegaal follows through in style.

The final round was held at Umtentweni Tennis Club which does offer some protection from the wind on the lower courts, but it was still tough going.

In the A-division, the Smash Masters – Geoff Borchers, Brendan Els, Renee Purtell and Deanne Purtell-Massyn – took first place.

Runners-up were the Salt and Twitters, namely Richard Short, Martyn Nagtegaal, Cheryse Wikstrom and Sharon van der Schyff.

Third place went to Serving Up Trouble in Darral Pillay, Raj Naganna, Liesl Smith and Natasha Cotterell.

B-division honours went to Broomers, namely Zakai Gilling, Jenny Senneck, Philip Schaffler and Geraldine Thompson.

Runners-up were the Court Jesters – Terri Peckham, Rob van der Schyff, Mary Rawlins and Nigel Wareing.

Elene Barbadimos is all focus while serving.

Third place went to the Racquet Scientists in Rob Cubbin, Andrew Delaney, Luise Mohr and Gill Spittal, who were also awarded the Spirit Cup..

Various other players filled in during the season for their respective teams, so it was very much a team effort all round.

* In other tennis news, the annual Uvongo Tennis Club Masters tournament is set to take place on the weekend of November 1 and 2. This year it has been renamed in memory of the club’s beloved president, Howard Osborne, who died on July 15 to the Howard Osborne Masters Open tournament.

Spirit Cup and third in the B-division goes to Rob Cubbin, Paul Delaney, Shirley Delaney, Luise Mohr and Gill Spittal.
