Close, but no cigar for Scottburgh golfer at Southern KZN Open

He was runner-up on 73 and 68, two shots behind the winner.

Bit rusty, but let’s see how it goes. That was how Jason Gilliver of Scottburgh Golf Club felt when deciding last-minute to play in the Southern KZN Open at Southbroom Golf Club last Sunday. The morning round showed this, with him shooting 73, not that good by his high standards. “Not holing much, irons are a bit off,” he said.

This may not have been helped by the rain which swept across the course during a miserable morning which saw all the golfers soaked and nine deciding to enter ‘no returns’.

A further six had withdrawn either the night before or on the morning after seeing the weather forecast, and there was one ‘no show’ on the day.

But back to Jason, who the week before had been invigilating exams at Glenwood High.

After 18 holes he was three off the pace, set by teenager Cameron Olivant of Port Shepstone Country Club.

The weather, thankfully, cleared to the extent that while still overcast, was clear and conducive to low scoring.

Jason was one of those who found the conditions to his liking, carding 68 to put pressure on young Cameron,

In the end, Cameron won on scores of 70 and 69, with Jason runner-up on 73 and 68, two shots behind.

Other golfers from the area took part as well, with Jan McDermott (Umdoni Park) scoring 79 and 71. Jordan Troughton (Umdoni Park) had scores of 82 and 75.

Tiaan Bekker (Selborne Park) was a little further behind on 78 and 82. Steve Swain (Umdoni Park) had a morning to forget with 88, but was vastly improved with a 78 in the afternoon.
