Pickleball gains momentum in Pennington
A local club is now the only officially recognised pickleball club in the Ugu District.
Pickleball is fast becoming a popular social and competitive sport globally, and now the momentum is growing on the South Coast.
It is known for being easy to learn while still offering a competitive and strategic game that appeals to players of all ages.
In Pennington, the sport has quickly built a strong following. Players from the area and nearby communities have taken to the courts to learn the game, improve their skills and enjoy the social side of the sport.

A local club at Umdoni Point Sports and Leisure in Pennington is now the only officially recognised pickleball club in the Ugu District after registering with the Pickleball Federation of South Africa.
The recognition connects the club to the national governing body for pickleball in South Africa and opens the door for local players to compete within the official provincial and national structures of the sport.
Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis and is played on a smaller court using paddles and a perforated ball.
Becoming officially registered with the federation now allows the club to play a more active role in the development of pickleball in the region. It also means that players who train and compete locally have a clear pathway to participate in recognised tournaments and events.
Those who wish to take their game further will now be able to work towards competing at provincial and national level through the official federation structures.
With the club now officially recognised, there is growing excitement about what the future may hold.
