Lift off for Village Eagles at Umkomaas Golf Club

There's always a great vibe on the day.

For two months in a row the Village Eagles golfers have had to have a fight with the department of weather affairs. The forecasters told them that they would not be playing golf at Umkomaas Golf Club on Tuesday, May 5. Their pictures were those ones that show a very dark cloud with rain drops falling out of them.

Well, the department does not know how annoyed golfers can be when their game is threatened. Standing under a shelter for 15 minutes telling the rain to go away worked because at 07:30, as the first players were getting ready to tee off, the rain stopped, never to return until everyone was dry on the outside and wet on the inside in the 19th hole. From this you can gather that the Eagles had a great morning of golf.

Winners were Des Curtin, Stella Scott, a very good ghost, and Wikus van Kraayenburg. Best lady on the day was Stella Scott, using her home course knowledge to score 47 points.

Best male player was Claudio Bellato on a respectable 43 points. Lifting the coveted Stones Trophy were Ian Lovett, Graham Coxell, Rick St John and Conrad Klusener.

Some records were broken on the morning and two need special mention. Only 15 balls were lost by the 45 players which means that 30 players went home with the same ball that they took out of their bags on arrival. It is also testament to a well presented golf course.

Secondly, if your name was not Ian then winning a prize for nearest the pin was not possible. Ian Aitken had two closest the pin shots and Ian Lovett landed the other two. It is not often that only two golfers walk away with the closest the pin prizes. The Eagles return to Umdoni Golf Club on June 2 and the weatherman has been warned to behave himself.
