South Coast runners shine at Cape Town Marathon

Thobe Marcia Cele has become a familiar face in South Coast running circles and continues to inspire fellow runners.

South Coast runners flew the local flag high at the prestigious Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, with Umtentweni’s Thobe Marcia Cele among those celebrating a memorable race-day experience.

Cele, a dedicated recreational runner and member of Tough Cookies Social Running Club, completed the iconic race alongside fellow club members Zama Mbambo and Mbali Shezi.

Sharing her excitement after crossing the finish line, Cele praised the event’s atmosphere and organisation.

“Sanlam Cape Town Marathon owes us absolutely nothing this year. From the start to the finish, everything was top tier – the organisation, the vibes, the community support along the route, and most importantly, we finished strong. What an unforgettable experience,” she said.

Cele was joined by her brother, Sbu Cele from Margate, who also enjoyed an amazing race.

This year’s successful finish carried special meaning for Cele after last year’s dramatic disappointment when the marathon w

as cancelled just hours before the start due to strong overnight winds.

While many runners packed away their race kits in disbelief after months of preparation, Cele chose a different path. Determined not to let the setback defeat her, she made the bold decision to complete the marathon distance on her own.

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is regarded as one of Africa’s premier road running events, attracting elite and recreational runners from across the globe.
