Des and Dawn add sparkle to Christmas brunch
The committee members ensured the event was perfect.
GUEST entertainers Des and Dawn Lindberg received a well-earned standing ovation at the end of their delightfully informal, funny and thoroughly enjoyable performance at the Tuesday Rostrum Christmas brunch.
The fact that these veteran South African singers seemed to be enjoying themselves so much added a special quality to their show. After all these years – all those performances, all those coffee bars, all the travelling to far flung dorpies and all the Sunday soirees – they still seem to have so much fun on stage.
There was a strong element of nostalgia to their performance. In South Africa Des and Dawn have been household names for such a long time that their much-loved old favourites – some revised for current times – just had to bring back memories. In some ways, their songs told the story of South Africa, embellished with a lively touch of humour, over the last nearly five decades.
They are no longer the bell-bottomed, flower-powered, revolutionary young folk singers they were back in the 1960s, but they seem to be comfortable with where they are now – as both performers and ordinary South Africans. Thoroughly professional as there show was, they were relaxed and friendly on stage, interacting warmly with their audience and bringing something fresh and relevant to their repertoire. Rather than just visiting entertainers, they seemed be part of Tuesday Rostrum that day.
It was not only the lovely show that made the Christmas brunch such a treat. The attractive Estuary Hotel was the perfect venue for the annual celebration. And the brunch was delicious. As usual, the Tuesday Rostrum committee members had fine-tuned the arrangements to ensure that the end-of-year event was a memorable one.
Tuesday Rostrum will take a holiday season break but the ‘friendly, thinking women’s club’ will be back in action from February next year. All local women are welcome to join the club and all South Coast residents, men as well as women, may attend any of the luncheons as guests. The committee has already lined up a long list of excellent speakers for next year.
