Editor's note

Respect please

Everyone has the right to celebrate their religion and the lighting of fireworks is a Diwali tradition and Hindus should not be deprived of this custom.

FIREWORKS always spark controversy among South Coast communities.

This year’s National Fireworks Guidelines state that fireworks are allowed to be lit on October 22 and 23 for the Diwali Festival period.

Those who are celebrating the Festival of Lights are urged to exercise caution and to be sensitive to their neighbours and animals. They are also asked to respect the designated times for setting off fireworks. These are from 7.30am to 10.30pm on both days.

Remember big bangs are banned and that by-laws need to be adhered to.

Loud bangs do cause animals great distress and fear. Pet owners need to take steps to ensure their animals are kept safe and calm. Consult a vet or the SPCA for calming medication.

Those who are not celebrating need to be considerate too.

Everyone has the right to celebrate their religion and the lighting of fireworks is a Diwali tradition and Hindus should not be deprived of this custom.

If we all show some respect during the festival we can diffuse potentially volatile situations.
