Respect for the property of others is paramount

The message we need to send to these criminals is that they will be stopped.

SIR Winston Churchill once said: “The further backwards you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.”

This is quite relevant in relation to crime reduction, as often vehicles are broken into or houses burgled because items are left on view.

Many home invasions are opportunistic – either a gate, window or door has been left open making access easier for the invaders.

The police and neighbourhood watch groups keep emphasising how important it is for all sectors of the community to work together to reduce burglaries.

We need to have operations at taxi and bus ranks to identify people who come into the area to commit crime. The message we need to send to these criminals is that they will be stopped.

And more importantly we need to teach people to respect other people’s property, just because they have it does not mean you can take it.
