How many countries are there in the world? Seems not everyone agrees…
There are officially less than 200 countries in the world.
It is commonly accepted that there are 196 countries in the world today.
Well, according to infoplease (click here for the full article), that’s probably only likely if you don’t do business with The People’s Republic of China on a global scale.
You see, Taiwan is in dispute.
It operates as an independent country, but many other countries (including the USA) do not officially recognise it as such.
The People’s Republic of China considers Taiwan a breakaway province … and so countries wishing to maintain diplomatic relations with China have had to sever their formal relations with Taiwan.
That’s not to say that trade doesn’t take place, it’s just that it’s ‘unofficial’.
The only countries not belonging to the United Nations are Taiwan, Kosovo (which declared independence from Serbia nearly 10 years ago) and the Vatican City.
