Services - and service clubs make the news this week.

THE first story sounds all too familiar.
November 7

1952
“THE necessity of imposing water restrictions after the Lower South Coast’s water scheme had been in operation for only three months resulted, last week, in widespread criticism of the corporation.”

1958
THERE was a call for the South Coast towns to work together to promote the area. “Stop publicising Margate – this provocative statement came this week from Mr Albert O’Connor, who urged the start of a regional publicity drive. “We cannot continue as we are doing with numerous publicity campaigns being waged at one and the same time by the various resorts. We must come together and make one big,” concerted effort.”

1975
IT was announced that the Margate amalgamation would continue and the Port Shepstone one would follow shortly afterwards.

November 8

1957
“THE one-way road bridge at St Michaels-on-Sea was reported to be in an ‘unsatisfactory’ after several accidents had resulted in damage to the railings.”

1974
“FOR the past five years businessmen, schoolmasters, farmers, tradesmen and builders have given their weekends and their services free of any payment to build the Marburg Community Hall.”

1985
“WORK is expected to start on the controversial link road between Uvongo and St Michael’s at the end of this week.”

AND a new service club came into being. “In an impressive ceremony the newly inaugurated Lions Club of Ramsgate received its charter last Saturday evening.”

November 9

1962
“YESTERDAY the Honourable the Minister of Bantu Administration and Development inaugurated officially the Ukukanyakufikile Regional Authority. Recently the chairman of this regional authority also welcomed officials and guests at the installation of Nkonka Ndwalani who was chosen regent of the Insimbini tribe by popular vote before a large gathering. There for the first time since 1803 the Insimbini tribe at Bhobhoyi had one of its own members as chief. For the last three generations the tribe had been ruled by descendants of Henry Fynn.”

1984
“RESIDENTS are bitterly opposed to a special consent application to erect a ready mixed concrete batching plant in Uvongo.”

1990
“MARGATE businessmen are in uproar following the Margate town council’s decision to install a toll parking area on the town’s beachfront.”

November 10

1967
ANOTHER service club was formed. “At the inaugural meeting of the Port Shepstone Bullslingers’ Club last Friday, over 20 people were present.”
