Gamalakhe event revives township culture
He said they also started the events company because the township is still looked at by outsiders as a hell-hole where the most sinister of crimes take place.
The Kasified Eksperience initiative was started by five men from Gamalakhe who saw the need to bring back the ‘Kasi’ (township) culture and boost township tourism.

The idea put forward by Musawakhe Khowa (27), Ayanda Masengemi (24), Cebo Cebekhulu (29), Mpilo Shusha (28) and Sfiso Mbambo (24), seeks not only to promote the township, but also its talent, social cohesion, unity, and many other things.
“There are so many things that make us unique as a township, from the things we do and eat, the music we listen to and so forth, those are some of the things that set us apart from all the other townships,” said founder member, Ayanda. “This is why we invite everyone to come and experience our township with us.”
He said they also started the events company because the township is still looked at by outsiders as a hell-hole where the most sinister of crimes take place.

“Yes, people struggle in the townships and most young people want to relocate, which is understandable, but through all the negativity the media touts, black people still have a great time ‘eKasi’.”
He added: “We started this initiative for so many reasons. There is so much talent in Gamalakhe; we have photographers, fashion designers, visual artists, musicians, but the problem is we don’t know each other; so this is the platform we created for young ‘creatives’ to network.”
Kasified events are generally on Sundays, free to the public and are always held at Bar eNdala in Gamalakhe. They held their first event on December 17 last year and people responded well to it, as well as to all the other events they have held. The group hosts street soccer tournaments, ‘park and braai’ sessions, music events and more.

“As much as this is a township initiative, we also urge people from suburban areas to come through; we will give them a tour and taste of the township. We want to see people from and outside our township reach their full potential and have fun while doing it,” said Ayanda.
“We are also planning to host a Kasi Career Expo for pupils who live in the township and to visit schools to create awareness on drug abuse and healthy living. Kasified Eksperience is yet to do more for the Gamalakhe community and surrounding areas.”
The next Kasified event will be held on Sunday, February 11.
