Although a box office failure, it received positive reviews from critics and some religious leaders upon its release and Scorsese received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Director.

1988:  Scorsese film crucified

British film censors risked damnation in this world and beyond by issuing the controversial film ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ with an 18 certificate. The film, by director Martin Scorsese, raised hell among Christian groups and church leaders on both sides of the Atlantic. Many of those condemning it had yet to see it.

Scorsese, a former altar boy who once entertained thoughts of entering the priesthood, denied that his film was an ‘intentional attack on Christianity’, the view of its morality in the media. It is, he said, ‘his way of getting closer to God.’
