It was a sad day for Britain when the divorce between the most popular Royal ever, Princess Diana and Prince Charles was finalised.

1996:  Fairy tale ends for Charles and Diana

Britain’s most infamous marriage came to an end with the divorce of the Prince and Princess of Wales on August 28, 1996. The marriage lasted 15 years and bore the couple two sons, William and Harry, but finally broke down because of ‘irreconcilable differences’.

Both the Prince and Princess publicly admitted to adultery. Princess Diana is said to have received a settlement of around £17 million, but she was stripped of her HRH title.

This was another huge blow to the Royal family and came just four months after the divorce of Prince Charles’s brother Andrew. The Duke and Duchess of York parted on good terms for the sake of their two young daughters, but the same could not be said for the Prince and Princess of Wales.
